The Hi'i Trail Loop offers a unique touring bicycle experience on Lana'i, guiding you through an enchanting forest of tall pines and lush greenery. You'll navigate a diverse terrain of rock, dirt, roots, and pine needles, with the fresh scent of eucalyptus filling the air. The route features intermittent overlooks of the forest descending to the ocean, culminating in the Hi'i Overlook, a designated viewpoint around 1.8 miles into the 4.0-mile (6.5 km) loop.
While the Hi'i Trail Loop is rated as moderate, be prepared for a steep incline at the beginning; after this initial push, the trail becomes relatively flat. It typically takes touring cyclists around 46 minutes to complete the 4.0-mile (6.5 km) distance, which includes 761 feet (232 metres) of elevation gain. This route is best suited for mountain bikes or e-bikes due to its varied and uneven surfaces.
Beyond its scenic beauty, the Hi'i Trail Loop holds significant cultural importance, leading to the Hi'i Heiau, an ancient Hawaiian cultural site. Dedicated volunteers work to protect and maintain this historical landmark, preserving its context for future generations. Many consider this trail one of Lana'i's best hidden gems, offering a relatively mild route that's great for both cycling and trail running.
