The Waiheʻe Ridge Trail offers a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience for joggers on Maui. You'll climb through diverse forests, starting with Eucalyptus and Cook Pines, then transitioning to native plants as you gain elevation. The trail provides expansive views of Waiheʻe Valley, ʻEke Crater, and Haleakalā, with the Pacific Ocean and coastline visible throughout your ascent to the Puʻu Lanilili summit.
This difficult 4.3-mile (6.9 km) route involves a sustained climb of 1401 feet (427 metres) and takes about 1 hour and 5 minutes. The terrain can be rocky, root-covered, and very muddy, especially after rain, so come prepared for a solid workout. Starting early in the morning is a good idea to beat the crowds and increase your chances of clear, unobstructed views before the clouds roll in.
Known as one of Maui's most popular trails for trail running, the Waiheʻe Ridge Trail is celebrated for its combination of accessible location and stunning, jaw-dropping panoramas. It's a fantastic way to experience the island's lush tropical landscape and dramatic geological formations, offering a unique blend of coastal vistas and ridge-top views.
