Silver Lake and Lake Quivira are both formed from Silver creek, which runs down below treeline from Saint Mary's Lake. There are cabins and condos all around the lake, many of which are available to rent.

Kingston Peak and St. Mary's Glacier Loop

The Kingston Peak and St. Mary's Glacier Loop offers a rugged alpine experience, transitioning from wooded paths to rocky, uneven terrain as you climb towards the glacier. You'll pass the beautiful St. Mary's Lake before reaching the semi-permanent St. Mary's Glacier, a popular landmark. Higher up, wind-sculpted bristlecone pines dot the landscape, leading to panoramic views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness, including peaks like Grays Peak and Torreys Peak. Expect significant rock scrambling and potentially wet snow, even in summer, making this a challenging but rewarding journey.

This difficult 4.9-mile (7.9 km) loop involves a substantial 1506 feet (459 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 1 hour and 16 minutes for experienced trail runners. The St. Mary's Glacier Trailhead is your access point, but be ready for high-altitude conditions and a path that can be a "doozy in places." Sturdy hiking boots are recommended due to the rocky surfaces and potential for snow. Always check the forecast, as alpine weather can be unpredictable.

While the St. Mary's Glacier portion is widely visited, extending to Kingston Peak offers a more strenuous and less crowded experience. The route provides excellent photo opportunities, especially at the Kingston Peak Trail junction. You might also encounter The Rock House, a unique landmark where visitors leave memorial rocks. This trail is a fantastic option for those seeking a demanding workout with expansive views of the Colorado Front Range.
