    Hiking

At 13,863 feet, Mount Spalding just misses the mark for 14er qualification, but this just means that there is a lot less traffic on the peak. You can easily link Mount Evans and Mount Spalding together in the same hike. The rocky, class 2 peak is often tackled from Summit Lake, but you can also traverse from Bierstadt or the Mount Evans parking area.

Prepare for a difficult jogging experience on the Mount Blue Sky Ridge Trail. This 5.5 miles (8.9 km) route challenges you with a significant 1557 feet (475 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking about 1 hour and 17 minutes to complete. As you ascend, you will pass impressive granite walls and ancient bristlecone pines, transitioning into unique arctic tundra ecosystems. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep or marmots. From the summit of Mount Evans, you are rewarded with expansive views across the entire Front Range and Colorado's eastern plains.

Before you go, remember that the high altitude around Mount Blue Sky requires careful acclimatization. Access to the trailhead is usually via the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, which is known as the highest paved road in North America. This makes the starting point for this prominent fourteener relatively easy to reach. Plan your visit carefully, especially considering seasonal road closures due to snow.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to experience an arctic tundra ecosystem at high elevation. The area is part of the Mount Evans Wilderness, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife. You will find yourself in a natural environment that stands out within the region, making it a notable destination for those seeking a challenging outdoor adventure.
