Here the trees start to thin and you get a great view down the slope of Cimarrona. There is no trail to the summit, but you keep going from here you can loop around Cimarrona via Hossick Lake or do an out-and-back to the CDT.

The Cimarrona Trail offers a difficult jogging experience, covering 8.9 miles (14.3 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2359 feet (719 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 2 hours and 8 minutes. While the first two miles provide a gentler start, the terrain quickly becomes rugged as you ascend from dense spruce and fir forests into open meadows. Keep an eye out for the distinctive Cimarrona Arch Window around 3.8 miles, which marks a notable point on your climb. As you push higher, the trail rewards you with expansive vistas of the San Juan Mountains and views of peaks like Dunsinane Mountain. This challenging route is designed for advanced joggers seeking a rewarding workout.

To begin your jogging adventure, head to the Cimarrona Trailhead and Campground, which serves as a convenient starting point. Be prepared for the terrain to become rugged and steep beyond the initial two miles. For better support and protection on this difficult route, sturdy hiking boots are recommended over typical jogging shoes. The trail generally experiences low crowd levels, offering a more secluded experience for your outing. Consider an early start to make the most of the cooler temperatures and quieter atmosphere.

This route takes you deep into the Weminuche Wilderness, providing a true backcountry experience. As you gain elevation, the landscape transforms, transitioning from dense forest into wide-open meadows. You will be treated to dramatic panoramic views, including the prominent Cimarrona Peak and Precipice Peak. The trail offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and solitude of the San Juan National Forest.
