    Hiking

A tip from locals: If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, drive across the ridge to the other side of Oahu. The beach of Kailua is really something special: fine sand, fresh green meadows, a few palm trees and even benches. If you want, take a kayak and drive to the offshore island "Popoia Island" (bird sanctuary).

    Hiking

A truly wonderful beach - very crowded at weekends. It is usually difficult to find a parking space here

The Lanikai Pillbox 1 – Lanikai Pillbox No. 2 Viewpoint loop from Kailua is a ridge hike that promises some of Oahu's most iconic scenery. You'll navigate uneven terrain, including a steep initial section, as you climb towards the historic pillboxes. From these vantage points, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of Lanikai Beach's turquoise waters and the distinctive Mokulua Islands, making the 4.1-mile (6.6 km) journey with 542 feet (165 metres) of elevation gain feel incredibly worthwhile.

Plan for an easy hike that takes about 1 hour and 56 minutes, but don't underestimate the initial climb. Parking is available in the residential areas of Kailua, so be mindful of local regulations. Many hikers choose to start before dawn to catch the stunning sunrise over the Pacific, which is highly recommended due to the trail's exposed nature and the heat that can build up later in the day.

This trail, also known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, is celebrated for its exceptional effort-to-reward ratio. Despite its relatively short distance, it offers panoramic vistas that extend to Kaneohe Bay and the Ko'olau Mountain Range on clear days. The historic World War II pillboxes themselves are unique landmarks, providing excellent photo opportunities and a tangible link to the island's past, making it a must-do for many visitors to Oahu.
