Before you set out, be aware that traffic can be moderate to heavy on the lower sections of the Mount Rose Highway. While the road surface is generally in good condition and often includes a wide shoulder for cyclists, caution is advised. The descent from the summit is known to be fast and sweeping; watch for high speeds and potential sand in the bike lane, especially early in the season. This loop is best suited for experienced road cyclists who have good fitness levels.
This entire route follows the Mount Rose Highway, which is designated as a Nevada Scenic Byway, ensuring a consistently picturesque journey. You'll experience the unique transition from the shores of Lake Tahoe up into the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The trail offers glimpses of Rose Knob Peak and the Tahoe Rim Trail, connecting you to the broader natural beauty of the region.
