    Hiking

The Jail Trail is a super popular path in Dead Horse Ranch State Park. The sandy path becomes firmer and easier to travel the further you walk from the trailhead, and there are some watering holes down next to the Verde River that are the pinnacle of the hike.

The Jail Trail offers a tranquil escape along the Verde River, perfect for a relaxed jog or stroll. This easy 1.6-mile (2.6 km) route, with only 26 feet (8 metres) of elevation gain, winds through shaded sections beneath towering Fremont cottonwood trees and willows. You'll enjoy bucolic views of the river, passing by ethereal stands of cattails and rock-strewn flood plains, making it a refreshing experience that feels far from the bustle of town.

Planning your visit is straightforward, as the trailhead is easily accessible from a large parking lot in Old Town Cottonwood. This makes it convenient to combine your 18-minute jog with exploring local shops and eateries. The trail is generally suitable year-round, but the shade makes it especially pleasant during warmer months or for an early morning outing.

Part of the Verde River Greenway State Natural Area, the Jail Trail is a haven for wildlife and an excellent spot for birdwatching, attracting species like Southwestern bald eagles. The trail's name comes from a nearby 1929 river-rock building that once served as Cottonwood's jail. It also connects to Riverfront Park, offering options to extend your adventure.
