In the hard coal town of Hückelhoven, near the Central Limburg town of Roerdalen, Großkünkel Rurkies is creating a natural lake with open, deliberately barren vegetation and swampy shore areas. The lake is located in the Doveren district on the banks of the Rur, a branch of the Meuse. On the map, the lake is designated as a Baggersee Großkünkel nature reserve.
The lake is the result of sand and gravel mining that was completed in 2020. The remaining preparation of the area will take place in 2021 and 2022.

Hiking

There is only a certain access and view over the lake from the Ruruferweg.
This runs over a narrow strip of land that separates the Rur from the lake.
The lake shore drops steeply - no bathing bays, especially since bathing is forbidden.

The lake of the former gravel works, operated until 2020, is designated as a nature reserve - including the shore zones.
To protect the sensitive nature and waterfowl, strict access bans apply here. Bathing, recreational sports or leaving official, marked paths are forbidden.
