This is a real bucket list climb. Challenging but completely worth it. The road starts going up at 2500 m above sea level, so you're already very high before you've even started pedaling. The summit tops out nearly 2000 m later at 4300 m. Breathtaking!

Embark on a challenging touring bicycle ride up Pikes Peak Summit via Pikes Peak Highway, a difficult route spanning 26.2 miles (42.2 km). You will climb a significant 5026 feet (1532 metres) in elevation, with an estimated duration of 3 hours and 38 minutes. As you ascend through Pike National Forest, you will experience distinct ecological zones, starting in dense forests before reaching the treeline around 11,500 feet (3,505 meters) where expansive vistas open up, leading to the high alpine terrain and unique pink Pikes Peak Granite near the summit.

Planning your visit requires attention to detail for this iconic climb. A fee is necessary to enter the park, so be prepared for that upon arrival. Weather conditions on Pikes Peak can change rapidly, with summit temperatures often 30-40°F lower than at the base, so dress in layers. It is highly recommended to start your ride early in the day to avoid heavy traffic on the highway and to steer clear of potential afternoon storms that can develop quickly at higher elevations.

This route offers more than just a physical challenge; it is a journey through diverse natural environments. You will witness the transition from lush forest to a rugged high alpine landscape, characterized by its unique pink Pikes Peak Granite formations. The trail culminates at the rewarding Pikes Peak Summit, providing panoramic views that showcase the vastness of the surrounding region and the beauty of the Pike National Forest.

Prepare for a truly difficult touring bicycle challenge on the Pikes Peak from Cascade route. This 37.4 miles (60.3 km) journey demands a significant 6787 feet (2069 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 5 hours and 4 minutes to complete. As you pedal, the scenery transforms dramatically, starting among the lush trees of Pike National Forest with views of Crystal Creek Reservoir, then transitioning to barren, rocky terrain above the treeline before you reach the summit.

Before you set out, always check the current weather and road conditions; high-altitude environments can change rapidly. Be aware that all cyclists must pay an admission fee to access the route, and riders under 18 years old need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This is a busy toll road shared with vehicular traffic, so stay alert and ride defensively throughout your ascent.

This route is widely recognized as one of the hardest paved climbs in the entire United States, offering a unique and demanding experience for touring cyclists. The reward for your effort is the expansive panoramic vistas of the Rocky Mountains and plains from the Pikes Peak Summit, a truly memorable view that highlights the dramatic landscape changes you experienced on your climb.
