    Road cycling

This is a super good recreation trail built along an abandoned tobacco railway line. Hence it is aptly named the American Tobacco Trail. It's a 22.6-mile long Rails-to-Trails project that crosses through Durham County, Chatham County, and Wake County. It has a variety of facilities and connector trailheads along the way.

Riders routinely ride the entire length of the ATT with a road bike. Gatorskin tires will hold up very well. Especially so if you have 28-32mm tires on. Watch out for runners and other trail users!

You can embark on a moderate road cycling adventure along the American Tobacco Historic District via American Tobacco Trail, covering 29.8 miles (48.0 km) with an elevation gain of 815 feet (248 metres). This route offers about two hours of riding through serene landscapes, primarily following a former railroad bed. As you cycle, you will pass through lush woodlands, catching glimpses of farm fields, ponds, and creeks. The trail runs parallel to Jordan Lake, providing a tranquil escape amidst undeveloped surroundings.

For your visit, be aware that the Wake County section of the trail features a compacted crushed granite screenings surface. While suitable for road bikes, you might find better stability with tires in the 28-32mm range or Gatorskin tires. You will find restrooms and water fountains conveniently located at various trailheads along the Wake County section, such as the New Hope Church Road Trailhead. Plan your start time to enjoy the natural beauty and historic elements at a comfortable pace.

This route stands out for its unique blend of natural scenery and historical significance, transforming an old railway into a vibrant path for outdoor enthusiasts. The American Tobacco Trail itself is a testament to repurposing infrastructure for community benefit, offering a peaceful corridor through the region. It provides a distinct experience, allowing you to connect with both the area's past and its natural environment.

Embark on a moderate 31.3-mile (50.4 km) road cycling journey from Durham to the New Hope Trailhead, gaining 891 feet (271 metres) in elevation over approximately 2 hours and 8 minutes. You will begin in urban and residential areas, often buffered by trees, before the scenery shifts. As you head south, the route becomes increasingly shaded and forested, offering views of pine trees. Look out for wildlife like deer and herons along the way. You will also cross several old railroad bridges spanning streams, adding to the scenic appeal of this enjoyable ride.

The New Hope Church Road Trailhead serves as a convenient access point for this route. Here you will find amenities such as restrooms, bike racks, a picnic area, and parking facilities. Be aware of road crossings, especially in the northern, more urbanized sections, where you need to exercise caution as cars may not always stop. The trail's generally flat and smooth surface makes it accessible for a wide range of users.

This route forms a section of the longer American Tobacco Trail, offering a pleasant experience for road cyclists. The transition from urban surroundings to dense forest provides a varied backdrop for your ride. Its well-maintained path and gentle elevation changes make it a popular choice for those seeking a consistent and enjoyable cycling excursion.
