Dragon's Back and White Mesa Loop

Embark on the Dragon's Back and White Mesa Loop, a moderate jogging route that offers a unique experience in the Ojito Wilderness. As you traverse this 7.4 miles (12.0 km) path, you'll gain 810 feet (247 metres) in elevation, with an estimated completion time of 1 hour and 21 minutes. The highlight is the "Dragon's Back" itself, a striking, undulating ridge of stark-white gypsum that provides incredible 360-degree views of the New Mexico landscape, including the distant Jemez Mountains and Cabezon Peak.

Planning your visit is key for this exposed trail. It's best enjoyed from fall through spring, as summer temperatures can be quite high due to the lack of shade. Since the area is somewhat remote with intermittent cell service, remember to bring your own water and sun protection. While popular for jogging, the route is part of a larger multi-use trail system, so stay aware of mountain bikers you might encounter.

This loop stands out for its distinctive geological features, particularly the gypsum ridge that dramatically contrasts with the surrounding colorful mountains. The feeling of "riding on top of the world" as you jog along this natural formation makes it a memorable adventure. It's a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the unique desert environment and appreciate the expansive, rugged beauty of the Ojito Wilderness.
