This mountain biking loop from Bellingham offers a dynamic ride, starting with scenic views across Bellingham Bay to the San Juan Islands as you cruise along the Interurban Trail. As you climb into Larrabee State Park, the scenery shifts dramatically to rich forests, leading you to the serene Fragrance Lake, encircled by a "fairytale forest" of primeval ferns and moss-draped Douglas firs. The northern part of the lake loop is particularly stunning, featuring a towering wall of Chuckanut sandstone covered in moss, giving it a "Jurassic Park" feel.

This moderate 23.7-mile (38.2 km) route involves a significant 2037 feet (621 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 53 minutes to complete. The initial section from Boulevard Park is easy, but the trails around Fragrance Lake include technical sections with roots and rocks, making it best suited for intermediate mountain bikers. Parking is readily available at Boulevard Park in Bellingham, and the route is generally rideable year-round due to the mild coastal climate.

What makes this route stand out is its accessibility, connecting Bellingham's urban waterfront directly to the rugged Chuckanut Mountains. It offers a progressive riding experience, moving from easy, scenic paths to more challenging climbs and technical singletrack. The Fragrance Lake Road also acts as a gateway to explore more advanced trails within the Chuckanut Mountain system, making it a great starting point for further adventures.
