The wetland plays an essential role in filtering some of the city's stormwater runoff, thus contributing to the protection of Lake Champlain. The only visible reminder of the barge canal's industrial past is the circa 1920 steel bascule bridge, also known as the "see-saw" bridge, located at the lake's outlet.
