The trail winds through the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Preserve, where you can enjoy expansive views of the restored coastal wetland, a prime spot for birdwatching. When planning your visit, be aware that while much of the San Elijo Lagoon Loop is easy and flat, the Annie's Canyon section is more adventurous. This very narrow slot canyon involves climbing ladder-style stairs and navigating tight spaces. If you experience claustrophobia or are jogging with a large dog, this section might not be suitable. Fortunately, an alternative moderate switchback trail is available to bypass the most challenging parts of the slot canyon, ensuring everyone can enjoy the route.
