Lace up your jogging shoes for the Annie's Canyon and San Elijo Lagoon Loop, a moderate 4.2-mile (6.8 km) route that offers a diverse experience in just 45 minutes. You will gain 189 feet (58 metres) in elevation as you explore varied terrain. The trail winds through the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Preserve, where you can enjoy expansive views of the restored coastal wetland, a prime spot for birdwatching. The highlight is Annie's Canyon, featuring unique sandstone walls and narrow, twisting passages. You can also catch panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from several viewpoints along the way.

When planning your visit, be aware that while much of the San Elijo Lagoon Loop is easy and flat, the Annie's Canyon section is more adventurous. This very narrow slot canyon involves climbing ladder-style stairs and navigating tight spaces. If you experience claustrophobia or are jogging with a large dog, this section might not be suitable. Fortunately, an alternative moderate switchback trail is available to bypass the most challenging parts of the slot canyon, ensuring everyone can enjoy the route.

This trail stands out for its unique geological feature: Annie's Canyon, where millions of years of water erosion have sculpted the sandstone into intricate formations. Beyond the canyon, the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Preserve is a vital coastal wetland, offering a rich habitat for diverse bird species and salt marsh ecosystems. It provides a fantastic opportunity to observe local wildlife and appreciate the natural beauty of the region.
