In 1388, almost the entire core of Pfaffenhofen was destroyed in a major fire. To replace the burned-down church, construction began in 1393 on a three-aisled basilica, which was completed around 1408. Construction on the 77.71-meter-high tower with its octagonal superstructure was not completed until 1531. The Gothic-style church comprised five bays.
