Embark on the Hike to Rifugio Schatzer loop, a moderate trail offering diverse terrain and expansive mountain views. This 4.5-mile (7.2 km) route involves an elevation gain of 895 feet (273 metres) and typically takes around 2 hours and 14 minutes to complete. You will hike through ancient forests and past alpine pastures, with mostly firm paths underfoot. Some sections might require you to be sure-footed. Along the way, you can enjoy views over the eastern slopes of Mount Plose, with the Dolomites visible in the distance. Keep an eye out for the distinctive peaks of the Geisler Group and Monte Fana. The area is known for its impressive mountain scenery.
For your hike, remember that proper equipment is recommended for mountain trails. This includes sturdy shoes to handle varied terrain and rain protection, as weather can change quickly. The trail is generally accessible, but being prepared will ensure a more comfortable experience.
The Rifugio Schatzer (Schatzerhütte) itself is a key highlight of this loop. Situated at an altitude of 2004 meters, the hut is known for its traditional Tyrolean hospitality and local cuisine. Many hikers enjoy the delicious food and welcoming atmosphere found there. The hut also serves as a starting point for other adventures, such as the ascent of the Gabler or the Günther Messner Steig. A section of the Dolomites High Route No. 2 also passes nearby, connecting Schnatzgraben and Schatzerhütte.
