Built by the MacLeods of Assynt, Ardvreck was the scene of clan struggles. In 1650, the Marquess of Montrose sought refuge here after losing the Battle of Carbisdale, but he was captured and handed over to his enemies; shortly afterwards he was executed in Edinburgh. In 1672, the Mackenzies attacked and took the castle, wresting control of Assynt from the MacLeods.

Ardvreck is also surrounded by legends. It is said that a daughter of a MacLeod chief was promised to the devil and ended up throwing herself into Loch Assynt. Another tradition speaks of a mysterious man dressed in grey who wanders among the ruins, whom some identify with the Marquis of Montrose, betrayed here in 1650.
