Immediately after the liberation, the survivors endeavored to transform this cemetery into a place of remembrance. Today it has become the Soviet cemetery of honor.
On May 7, 1945, a group of former prisoners began construction work on a 10-meter high obelisk, which was to serve as a memorial. They were also supported by German residents.
