The Wildwood Preserve Metropark – Heron in Wetlands loop from Ottawa River offers a delightful journey through a unique floodplain ecosystem, perfect for an easy outing. You'll traverse a mix of dirt paths and boardwalks, including the Lusk/Mewborn Boardwalk, winding alongside the Ottawa River. The scenery is dominated by impressive floodplain trees like cottonwoods and sycamores, creating a lush, natural corridor where you can often spot animal tracks in the mud and, true to its name, various wading birds in the wetland areas.
This easy 3.3-mile (5.4 km) hike involves a minimal 64 feet (19 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 1 hour and 22 minutes to complete. It's a pedestrian-only route, ensuring a peaceful experience. While the park is generally accessible, checking for current conditions, especially after heavy rains that might affect the floodplain, is a good idea. Spring and summer are particularly rewarding for wildflowers and active wildlife.
Wildwood Preserve Metropark is a significant natural area within the generally flat landscape of northwest Ohio, known for its sandy soil indicative of the rare Oak Openings Region. Beyond the river, the 493-acre park features diverse ecosystems, including prairies that burst with wildflowers in summer. The preserve also holds historical charm, being the former estate of Toledo's Stranahan family, with the stately Manor House open for free tours.
