The Lake Apopka Loop Trail offers a unique touring cycling experience, winding along old farm roads and levees that are predominantly unpaved with hard-packed limerock, gravel, and dirt. You'll be treated to expansive views of Lake Apopka and its wetlands, especially from the North Shore levee, and can expect abundant wildlife sightings, including over 360 bird species and numerous alligators. It's a journey through a thriving ecosystem, showcasing a significant environmental restoration success.
This moderate 22.2-mile (35.7 km) route, with a gentle 156 feet (48 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes about 2 hours and 32 minutes to complete. While physically easy, the rough terrain makes hybrid or fat tires a must. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection, as there's little shade along the route, and strong winds can be a factor. Multiple trailheads allow you to customize your ride length.
What makes this trail truly stand out is its role as a prime example of environmental restoration, transforming one of Florida's most polluted lakes into a vibrant habitat. It's a world-class cycling destination in Central Florida, offering a remote feel despite its proximity to communities, and provides exceptional opportunities for birdwatching and spotting native Florida wildlife.
