The A-train Rail Trail loop from Downtown Denton Transit Center offers a smooth, easy road cycling experience along a paved concrete path. As you pedal, you'll witness a changing landscape, from glimpses of natural areas to the edges of small towns, all while riding alongside the active A-train commuter line. A particularly scenic stretch crosses Lewisville Lake, providing wide-open views that break up the urban and suburban sections of the route.
This 20.4-mile (32.8 km) loop is rated easy, with a gentle 360 feet (110 metres) of elevation gain, making it achievable in about 1 hour and 40 minutes. You can start directly from the Downtown Denton Transit Center, which has parking. Remember to be cautious at frequent street crossings and be prepared to dismount and walk your bike at "Z crossing fencing" sections for safety.
What truly sets this trail apart is its "rail-with-trail" configuration, allowing you to combine cycling with public transport. You can bring your bike on the A-train and use any of the five DCTA stations along the route to customize your ride, making it easy to explore different segments or plan one-way trips. The trail also features convenient amenities like rest areas, repair stations, and history boards about the A-train.
