To begin this challenging hike, you will head to the historic military barracks at Caserme Vin Vert, located near Oulx. Access is straightforward; take the A32 Frejus-Turin motorway exit at Oulx Circonvallazione, then follow SP 214 and signs leading to the area. Plan your visit carefully, as this high-altitude route demands good weather conditions and proper preparation. Ensure you have adequate supplies and are ready for a sustained climb in exposed conditions.
This route, following trail 717A, leads you into the heart of the Ambin Group within the Cottian Alps, an area rich with history. You will traverse paths that are part of a network of historic military roads, used for centuries, adding a unique historical layer to your adventure. The presence of Bivacco Berrone, a basic mountain shelter, offers a welcome spot for a break or an overnight stay, providing mattresses for about eight people amidst this wild landscape.
