The number of drowned church villages in Zeeland is approximately 117. These are mainly villages from the later Middle Ages, roughly the period from 1000 to 1500. Zeeland also has drowned settlements from earlier times, such as the Roman Ganuenta near Colijnsplaat and the early medieval Walacria near Domburg .

Due to the excessive cutting of peat for salt extraction and as fuel, the entire region fell more than a meter lower, so that the entire area and the village of Reymerswael fell prey to the waves. The information panels present tell you in detail about the disappearance of the village and its residents.
