December 1, 1944, a team of American "flying fortresses", perhaps 12, razed almost a third of the town along the Serravalle - Tortona communication route. About thirty buildings including the railway station, the rectory, the schools and the nursery were practically obliterated by a hail of fire. In the furious allied attack 114 civilians lost their lives while 235 were injured, many of them very seriously.
