Embark on an easy hike along the Upper South Prong Trail, a 2.8-mile (4.5 km) route that leads you to the South Prong Primitive Camping Area. You will experience a gentle ascent, gaining just 123 feet (37 metres) in elevation, making this a relaxing journey that takes approximately 1 hour and 11 minutes. As you walk, you will be surrounded by spectacular canyon views and unique geological formations, including impressive red rock formations and towering rock fins that define the landscape.
When planning your visit, remember that the South Prong Primitive Camping Area offers a true wilderness experience. While there is a primitive bathroom available, you will not find showers or potable water, so pack all necessary supplies, especially enough water for your trip. Parking is generally accessible at the main trailhead for Caprock Canyons State Park, providing a convenient starting point for your adventure.
This trail offers a glimpse into a landscape often compared to miniature versions of Sedona, Arizona, or Zion National Park due to its striking formations. Keep an eye out for the Texas State Bison Herd, which roams freely throughout the park; always maintain a safe distance from them. You might also spot prairie dog towns along the way, adding to the rich wildlife experience and natural charm of the area.
