Mountains are usually impressive but when they’re part of a crashing coastline, they can be even more magnificent. Slieve League (also known as Sliabh Laig and Slieve Laig), is one such wonder. An epic peak with some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe and a summit at 1,955 feet (596 m), the mountain’s cliffs are almost three times higher than Ireland’s famous Cliffs of Moher.
The mountain has more than natural intrigue, its history is fascinating too. In the 18th and 19th centuries when Roman Catholics were forced to convert to the English Anglican faith, dissenters met in secret and one meeting place was here on Slieve League. As you ascend, you’ll see the meeting place – Mass Rock – as a ruined wall.
Tremendous cliffs and exquisite views
You’ll find this summit in the north west of Ireland, on Donegal’s wild and rugged coast. There are several paths to the top of varying degrees of difficulty, including the Pilgrim’s Path, the most commonly used trail.
This trail starts from Teelin and is a mixture of lanes, sandy tracks and rocky paths. While the distance is quite short, the going is steep in places. You can also approach (or leave) via One Man’s Path, a knife-edge ridge to the north of the summit. This route is jaw-dropping but only for confident, experienced hikers.
From the glorious summit, you can enjoy phenomenal views along Donegal’s jagged coastline and south to County Sligo and County Mayo. Take care near all cliff edges and there are numerous spots to get safe but awe-inspiring views of the crashing waves.
This peak is best climbed in good weather and great care should be taken to avoid fog and other dangerous conditions. On Ireland’s exposed western shore, the weather can change quickly, so always check the forecast and keep an eye on the sky.

Slieve League is a mountain on the Atlantic coast of County Donegal, Ireland. At 594 metres, it has some of the highest sea cliffs on the island of Ireland. Although less famous than the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Slieve League's cliffs reach almost three times higher. It has a trig pointed summit and is a designated Marilyn but just below the height required for it to be a Hewitt. A superb mountain to do with world class views.

The Slieve League in Ireland is a stunning place to hike. The mountain is 600 meters high and offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, including the Atlantic. The most popular hiking trail is the cliff path, which runs along the cliffs and is a challenge for any hiker who likes to hike at heights. However, there are also flatter trails for less experienced hikers. The landscape is characterized by green hills and cliffs that jut out into the sea. Slieve League is a must for anyone wanting to experience the great outdoors of Ireland.
