    Hiking

The area around Great Falls was inhabited for a long time by indigenous peoples, especially Blackfoot Indians. In the summer of 1805, the explorers of the Lewis and Clark Expedition reached the great falls.

In May 1882, Paris Gibson came to Great Falls and planned to build a town. He was financially supported by James J. Hill, the president of the Great Northern Railway. The town was finally founded in 1884, and the first railroad arrived at the station in 1887. In 1950, Great Falls was the largest city in Montana.

The Hiking loop from Great Falls offers a delightful and accessible outdoor experience, perfect for a quick escape into nature. You'll traverse gentle dirt and gravel paths, winding through forested sections that open up to views of the Potomac River. While the route is easy, you might catch glimpses of the impressive Great Falls or the dramatic Mather Gorge, providing a sense of grandeur without the strenuous effort. It's a peaceful way to immerse yourself in the park's diverse ecosystems, where you might spot local wildlife like birds or deer.

Planning your visit to this easy 3.1-mile (4.9 km) loop is straightforward, taking about 1 hour and 14 minutes with only 33 feet (10 metres) of elevation gain. Parking is available at Great Falls National Park, though it can fill up quickly on weekends, so an early start is recommended. There are no specific permits required for this general area, but park entrance fees apply. Consider visiting during the spring or fall for pleasant weather and vibrant foliage, or even a winter hike for clearer river views.

This particular loop is notable for its accessibility and the high reward-to-effort ratio, making it one of the best hikes Great Falls has for a relaxed outing. The Great Falls area itself is renowned for its awe-inspiring waterfalls, where the Potomac River dramatically drops, and its historical significance, including the remains of the Patowmack Canal. It's a fantastic option for families or anyone seeking a refreshing walk close to urban centers, offering a taste of the park's natural and historical treasures.
