The medieval treadwheel crane of the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey illustrates the technical possibilities of the Middle Ages. The large wooden wheel was likely used to transport and lift heavy building materials during the expansion of the high-lying abbey. Workers moved the wheel using their body weight, setting in motion a simple but effective lifting mechanism. Today, the structure serves as a reminder of the particular construction challenges involved in building the abbey on the rock.

This wheel was installed by the penitentiary institution in the 19th century. At that time Mont-Saint-Michel was a prison!
