Iron processing in Kathal, which was mentioned in 1305 as Kateyl, was of supra-regional importance. In the 15th century there were two hammers in Eppenstein. In the 18th century the products, scythes and sickles, were sold as far as central Germany, Switzerland and Transylvania. In the 19th century the iron industry then declined. Today there is still a tool forge in the village, the Kathalschmiede.
