💧 Water source en route
Water is scarce on Matajur: the limestone lets rain seep away immediately, springs only emerge further down where impermeable layers begin. On Idrska planina they feed the cattle troughs, on the Italian side the tributaries of the Natisone spring from the foot of the mountain, including the Skrila stream below the Rifugio. Water from cattle troughs should not be drunk unfiltered because of the livestock – take enough supplies with you, there are no huts en route.
