The Monte bonnet Nature Reserve is a protected area in the province of Trapani. It extends into the municipalities of Custonaci and San Vito Lo Capo and has Monte Cofano as its symbolic mountain. It was established in 1997 and is still a very popular and appreciated destination.

Today 13.7. We were "forced" to go back: reason, as I understand it, closed for a landslide

    Hiking

Very nice hiking trail on the saddle of Monte Cofano. The trail is easy enough to walk, but sturdy shoes are a plus. And in some places, trekking poles are useful. The dwarf iris blooms early in the year. Very nice.

Embark on the Riserva del Monte Cofano ring tour, a challenging hike that takes you through dramatic coastal landscapes and mountainous terrain in northwestern Sicily. This route offers sweeping vistas of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding unspoiled coastline, with dramatic cliffs rising steeply from the water. You will traverse varied terrain, including rocky outcrops and steep limestone sections, making it a difficult journey covering 6.5 miles (10.5 km) with an elevation gain of 1931 feet (588 metres), typically taking around 4 hours and 9 minutes to complete.

When planning your visit, be aware that the full loop demands good fitness and sure-footedness, especially if you include the summit ascent. It is strongly advised against hiking in high heat or wet conditions due to the demanding nature of some sections. Sturdy shoes are essential for navigating the rocky and sometimes technical parts of the trail. While some coastal portions are flatter, the overall experience requires preparation for a strenuous outing.

This protected coastal area, established in 1997, is notable for its unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The striking limestone peak of Monte Cofano, rising 659 metres from the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a prominent landmark. The reserve also features ancient watchtowers, like Torre di San Giovanni, which were part of a Spanish coastal defense system. You can also observe karstic landscapes, which are geological formations created by the erosion of limestone rock.
