The old fortified medieval town of Slunj was mentioned for the first time in 1323, when the Croatian-Hungarian King Charles I. Robert donated the parish of Drežnik with Slunj to the Duke of Krčko, the future Frankopan. It is believed that there was already a fort there then.
From 1390, Pavao Zrinski was the owner of Slunj for a short time, and Slunj would later pass into the hands of Frankopans again. Based on the division of inherited family property in 1449, Slunj became the seat of the Frankopans of Slunj until 1579, when that line of Frankopans died out.
