The hiking experience from Slaughter House Beach car parking offers a dramatic start to a challenging coastal adventure. You'll begin with a steep descent down a long concrete stairway, transitioning to a dirt path through native trees, all while enjoying views of the blue ocean and lush cliffs. The trail leads to a secluded stretch of soft golden sand framed by lava rock, with Molokai visible across the water on clear days. This difficult route is best for experienced hikers ready for a substantial workout.
This 11.4-mile (18.3 km) hike involves a significant 1713 feet (522 metres) of elevation gain, typically requiring about 5 hours and 21 minutes. Parking is available along Honoapiilani Highway (Hwy 30), but be prepared for potentially limited and paid spots. There are no public facilities, so bring all your water and supplies. The trail can be narrow and slippery in parts, making proper hiking footwear essential.
Slaughterhouse Beach, also known as Mokule'ia Bay, is part of the Honolua-Mokuleia Bay Marine Life Conservation District. In summer, its clear waters are perfect for snorkeling among coral reefs and sea turtles, while winter transforms it into a surfing destination with impressive waves. The beach's intriguing name comes from a former slaughterhouse on the cliffs, adding a historical layer to this unique Maui spot.
