Menhir is borrowed from the Breton name for a prehistoric, towering stone block, which is also known as Hinkelstein.
In prehistoric archeology, the word refers to an elongated single stone (Breton maen, stone ', hir, lang') erected by humans in prehistoric times.
The identification as a menhir is often only to verify by an excavation. Upright stones also served as landmarks, resting stones, advertisements for quarries, modern memorial stones and garden ornaments as well as marking of streets.
