In 1831 Hillerød's first town hall - with associated courthouse, prison and spray house - was built in the area now known as Torvet.
After 56 years, the town hall had become too small. The old town hall was demolished to make way for a larger space. This was completed in 1888. The new town hall was built in neo-Gothic style and was twice the size of its predecessor. So there was plenty of space in the new town hall.
