The Col de Forclaz is heavily frequented by car traffic in summer (it's not the Reschen Pass, but it's still not particularly relaxing). Therefore, on the ascent, it's recommended to take this quieter—and, in my opinion, more scenic—alternative route, which largely avoids the main road. The only drawback: coming from Martigny, the average gradient is 10%.
Unfortunately, the main road is unavoidable in the middle section of the climb, but you can detour before and after it.
