The former Royal Prussian Post Office in Salzwedel is located at Große-Sankt-Ilsen-Straße 22 and was built in the first half of the 18th century. It is a two-story, gabled, half-timbered building with a striking dormer window. The upper floor housed a stately ballroom, reflecting the building's importance as a major transportation hub in the Altmark region. For decades, the post office served as a central station for passenger and postal traffic. Today, the building is a listed building and is considered an important example of Baroque half-timbered architecture and a testament to the urban infrastructure development of this period.

The postmaster's son Friedrich Meinecke was born in this building on October 30, 1862. At that time, his father, Friedrich Ludwig Meinecke, was working as a Royal Prussian Postmaster in Salzwedel.
Meinecke is still considered one of the most influential German historians and the founder of the modern history of political ideas. After the Second World War, he decisively shaped the German university landscape by co-founding the Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin) in 1948 and becoming its very first rector.
