Clinton River Trail – Clinton River Bridge loop from Dequindre / 18 Mile (NB)

The Clinton River Trail – Clinton River Bridge loop from Dequindre / 18 Mile (NB) is an easy touring cycling route that, on paper, covers 21.7 miles (34.9 km) with a minimal 212 feet (65 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 1 hours and 59 minutes. However, the actual experience is currently complicated by significant trail closures and varied terrain. Expect a mix of rough asphalt, crushed stone, and even grassy two-track paths, making it less ideal for road bikes and more suited for bikes with wider tires if you venture onto the open sections of the Clinton River Trail. The scenery shifts from tranquil river views to suburban and urban stretches.

Planning your ride requires careful attention to current conditions. A major section of the Clinton River Trail from Dequindre Road to Rochester has been closed since July 2024 due to washouts and is not expected to reopen until Spring 2026. This means any loop starting near Dequindre will require using a detour on public roads. For a smoother ride, consider the Macomb Orchard Trail, which connects at Dequindre Road and offers a fully paved surface, or explore the Clinton River Park Trail further east.

This specific route attempts to connect parts of the Clinton River Trail, which is a key component of both the Iron Belle Trail and the Great Lake-to-Lake Trails Route #1. Historically following an abandoned rail line, its diverse surfaces reflect its evolution. For touring cyclists seeking a consistent, paved experience, the Macomb Orchard Trail or the Clinton River Park Trail (CRPT) are generally better options in the region, offering pleasant scenery through orchards, fields, and wooded areas with well-maintained surfaces.
