The lake was excavated in 1958, when sand was needed for the construction of the ring road bridges in Silkeborg. Today, Schoubyes Sø is a popular bathing lake. There are no bathing facilities at the lake, but there are several small sandy beaches where you can swim. The bathing area is child-friendly, and because of the shallow water, the water temperature is often higher here than in the other bathing lakes. There is parking at the parking lot between the pine trees out to Linåvej. The lake can also be reached by bike from Gjernstienen.
