The Frauentor was called "Kuhtor" until 1695 and was one of the city gates of the former Schongau. The gate was first mentioned in 1392. The gate tower was demolished in 1695 because it was in disrepair, and was then redesigned as a baroque fortification.
Between 1984 and 1985, the complex was extensively renovated and a historic wine bar with outdoor seating was built.
