On the initiative of the then mayor Christian Raymond and Bob Cotten – UFO enthusiast and employee of Mérignac airport – this crazy but brilliant idea was born: a UFO landing pad on the Esplanade Georges Dartiguelongue, right on the beach. The inauguration took place on August 15, 1976, as part of the Oyster Festival, with great pomp (and oyster shells).
