A new habitat for sand lizards was created in 2012. The relocation of the old habitat to the site of the current Leimen wastewater treatment plant was apparently successful; there is evidence of an increase in the lizard population, which is strictly protected in Europe, following the relocation.

In Leimen (Baden-Württemberg), the protection of the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) plays a central role, primarily in the context of the former quarry and urban construction projects. As the species is strictly protected under the Habitats Directive (Annex IV), special retreat areas often have to be created or preserved for it.
