The Bertha Peak – Cougar Crest Trailhead loop from Big Bear City offers a rewarding journey through diverse terrain to one of Big Bear's best viewpoints. You'll wind through pine and oak forests, steadily gaining elevation, with continuous vistas of Big Bear Lake opening up as you climb. The final push to the 8,201-foot Bertha Peak summit is steep and rocky, but the 360-degree panoramic views of the San Gorgonio Wilderness and San Gabriel Mountains are well worth the effort.
This difficult 10.8-mile (17.4 km) hiking route involves 1412 feet (431 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 5 hours and 29 minutes. Parking at the Cougar Crest Trailhead requires an Adventure Pass, though free parking is available at the Big Bear Discovery Center nearby. Arrive early, especially on weekends, as this popular trail can get crowded, and be sure to carry plenty of water for exposed sections.
Considered one of Big Bear's top hikes, this loop connects with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) for a portion of its length, adding to its appeal. Wildflowers bloom in abundance during the summer months, and you might even spot deer grazing along the path year-round. It's a challenging but highly scenic option for experienced hikers in the Big Bear Lake area.
