This section of the Continental Divide Trail follows the former Alpine Tunnel Railroad, a high-elevation narrow-gauge line driven under the Continental Divide in the early 1880s to connect remote mining towns. It was abandoned after persistent damage and the tunnel has long since collapsed. Today, much of the former railbed forms the Alpine Tunnel Trail that follows the old grade from sites like Hancock to the sealed east portal and the restored historic station area.
