The historic Achaia Clauss (Αχαΐα Κλάους) winery is considered the country's first organized winery and was founded in 1861 by the Bavarian merchant Gustav Clauss.
Gustav Clauss originally came to Greece for the raisin trade, but quickly recognized the potential of the local vines and founded an "Oenological Community". The winery is world-famous for the creation of Mavrodaphne, a deep red, sweet dessert wine. According to legend, Clauss named the grape variety after his fiancée Daphne, who died young.
