This is the former Dam wall of Skyreholme Dam which was also known as Fools Dam as it was built on the permeable limestone, a poor choice for holding water. The Dam fed a paper mill in the village. You can clearly see the damage in the former dam wall when it failed in 1899 and was never repaired.
