The View of Lake Mead – Hoover Dam loop from Railroad Pass is a challenging touring cycling route that combines historical intrigue with vast desert scenery. You'll pedal through the rugged Mojave Desert, with continuous views of Lake Mead and Boulder Basin, before riding through five historic railroad tunnels that lead directly to the iconic Hoover Dam. The terrain includes significant elevation changes on the paved River Mountains Loop Trail, making this 28.7-mile (46.2 km) ride, with its 2461 feet (750 metres) of gain, a rewarding experience for fit cyclists in about 3 hours and 11 minutes.

Planning your ride requires attention to the elements; the best time to cycle is between October and March to avoid extreme summer heat. Be sure to bring plenty of water, as services are scarce along the route. Access to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, where the trail is located, requires a park pass or admission fee.

This route stands out for its unique blend of natural beauty and engineering marvel. The Historic Railroad Trail section uses the original rail beds from the 1930s, built to transport materials for the Hoover Dam, offering a tangible connection to this monumental construction. Keep an eye out for desert wildlife like bighorn sheep and jackrabbits, which are often spotted along the trail.
