A piece of European traffic history lies hidden in the forests and valleys between Gemünden am Main and Bad Brückenau: The almost 70 km long "Route 46" between Fulda and Würzburg was to be built here. Connection was an outstanding function right from the start of the motorway construction.

Near Schonderfeld, information boards on the Saale cycle path provide information about a “forgotten motorway”. At the time of the Nazi dictatorship, an almost 70 km long section of motorway was to be built between Fulda and Würzburg as the so-called “Route 46”. Construction began in 1937, but the start of World War II in 1939 brought an end to the project. To this day, there are numerous unfinished bridge structures and fragments of the highway along the planned route.
