Torre degli Acquaviva – the tower that defied cannons
The Torre degli Acquaviva (Il Torrione) is the last remnant of an impressive 15th-century defense system. After the original castle was destroyed in 1462 by the troops of the King of Naples using early cannons, the Acquaviva family built a completely new city wall with nine round towers. The cylindrical shape was a clever military innovation at the time: cannonballs bounced off it more easily than off the old square towers.
